Chapter 18

Lissa

As Oz leads the three of us through the narrow alleys to Silverfoot’s court, I can feel Locke glowing with his newly found energy.

Anna doesn’t say anything about it, but she gives me a few patented younger-sister smirks which I do my best to ignore. “What do I need to know about him?” I ask her instead.

“He’s old, vain, and—” Anna breaks off, looking around as she tightens her jaw. “Just don’t cross him. He uses a glamour to look handsome,” she says, shuddering, “but he’s a mean old man.”

“Great,” I mutter.

That doesn’t bode well. I’m not about to get fooled by his looks. He has no authority over me or my kingdom, so if he has the ego Anna says, I don’t know how I’ll talk to him without getting kicked out—or lying, showing my magic, and then getting kicked out.

“Better stop talking if you like your thumbs,” Oz says softly.

I press my lips together, and my heartbeat speeds up at the warning. I can feel eyes on us, but when I look around, this part of the Underbelly is strangely empty.

The air is tense. Nobody is walking past us, or bringing the laundry in from the windowsills, or even looking out from their shops at us.

Locke’s gaze flicks around rapidly, and he walks like he’s ready for a fight. I don’t think he likes it either.

We reach a nondescript warehouse, and finally there are other people—four men. One is sitting and three leaning against the doors. They’re clearly guards.

All of them rise and face us as we approach, looking at Oz and then the rest of us. Their scrutiny makes me nervous, but I don’t think they’re looking for signs of magic so much as weapons.

“It’s a rich night. I feel it in my toes,” Oz greets them, and they relax and nod us past, but they watch us like they expect trouble.

That’s the worst secret phrase ever. I don’t dare say it out loud, but I catch Locke’s lips twitching as he glances at me.

I agree. Locke’s voice is a soft whisper in the back of my mind.

I catch my breath, my eyes flying wide open. That’s the first time I’ve heard him! This afternoon must have strengthened the bond between us enough.

I couldn’t ask for better timing than now, walking into a court of thieves.

We walk down a hallway with more men lounging in niches and shadows, and then we pass through a pair of thick wooden doors and reach a spacious reception room. I blink, looking at the dark hallway and then around me again.

It feels like we walked into a different building, or perhaps a different dimension. It’s not a dark, intimidating warehouse anymore. There’s silver and gold, and the niches in the walls are filled with statues instead of menacing guards.

I’m half-afraid to step on the plush carpets underfoot with my muddy travel boots, but everyone else does.

The mix of people here is strange: some are clearly thieves, with rags and quick smiles and daggers at their waist.
